Book Review: When I See You Again by Christine Anthony

There are some stories that invite you in quietly, almost politely, and then refuse to let go. When I See You Again by Christine Anthony was one of those for me — a novel I didn’t just read, but lived in for a while.

At its heart, this is the story of Allie Cunningham, a woman trying to rebuild herself after a devastating divorce. Betrayal has left her cautious, guarded, and deeply aware of how fragile trust can be. When Lucien Dukaine — a world-renowned composer with charm, talent, and more than a hint of arrogance — reenters her life, Allie’s carefully laid plans begin to unravel.

Lucien is not an easy character to trust. In fact, I found myself mirroring Allie’s hesitation. He arrives carrying all the warning signs: fame, ego, and a reputation that suggests emotional impermanence. And yet, beneath that polished exterior, Christine Anthony slowly reveals something far more human. Watching Lucien shed his carefully curated façade, layer by layer, was one of the most rewarding aspects of the story. His emotional arc feels earned, not rushed — and that restraint makes all the difference.

The road trip to Haunted Harbor, Maine, serves as both a physical journey and an emotional one. Anthony’s depiction of this small coastal town is utterly charming. Haunted Harbor feels alive — the kind of place where history lingers in the sea air and everyone knows more than they say. I found myself wishing it were real, just so I could wander its streets and breathe it in myself.

And then there’s the cottage.

Allie’s connection to the abandoned house is immediate and unsettling in the best way. The cottage doesn’t simply exist as a setting; it calls to her. The light paranormal elements woven into the story are subtle and atmospheric rather than overwhelming, adding tension and mystery without ever overpowering the emotional core of the novel. I loved how the strange occurrences felt purposeful — tied to the past, to memory, and to unresolved truths.

What struck me most about When I See You Again was its emotional honesty. This isn’t just a paranormal romance; it’s a story about grief, self-protection, timing, and the courage it takes to open yourself up again — to another person, to a place, to a life you didn’t plan.

Christine Anthony excels at creating characters who feel real, flawed, and deeply human. I found myself rooting for Allie not just to find love, but to reclaim herself. And by the time the final pages arrived, I wasn’t ready to leave Haunted Harbor behind.

I highly recommend When I See You Again to readers who enjoy romance with depth, a touch of the paranormal, and a setting that wraps itself around you like fog rolling in from the sea. This is a story that stays with you — quiet, haunting, and unexpectedly tender.

Well done, Christine Anthony. I sincerely hope Haunted Harbor has more stories left to tell.
