This saga was a genuinely rewarding journey.
The first book, A Threat From The Past, takes its time. The action is mostly concentrated at the beginning and the end, and at first I found myself wishing for a little more urgency in the middle. That said, the slower pace serves an important purpose: it allows the characters to breathe.
Peter, in particular, is an interesting protagonist. He is kind, well-meaning, and undeniably naïve — sometimes frustratingly so. I often wanted to shake him and tell him to pay closer attention to what was unfolding around him. But in hindsight, that innocence becomes part of the story’s emotional architecture. His growth across the series feels earned, not forced, and watching him mature into his role gives the later books real weight.
What truly surprised me was how engaging the everyday moments were. The author has a talent for making ordinary scenes feel purposeful and quietly entertaining, which is no small feat in a fantasy setting filled with dragons, ancient grudges, and hidden worlds.
From A Chilling Revelation onward, the series finds its stride. The scope widens, the action sharpens, and the emotional stakes climb. New characters are introduced seamlessly, the mythology deepens, and the story becomes increasingly confident in its blend of adventure, humour, friendship, and looming danger. By A Twisted Prophecy, the narrative feels bold and fully realised, unafraid to explore darker themes while still holding onto its sense of wonder.
The prequel, Frozen to the Core, adds an unexpectedly chilling layer to everything that comes before it. It reframes the conflict not just as a battle between sides, but as the long echo of choices, cruelty, and love — particularly a mother’s love — rippling forward through time.
Taken together, this is a series that grows in strength, ambition, and emotional depth with each instalment. It may begin quietly, but it builds into something rich, exciting, and surprisingly heartfelt.
I’d happily recommend it to anyone who enjoys fantasy with strong characters, evolving stakes, and a story that rewards patience.
