Some stories are written to entertain. Others become something far more personal to the person writing them.
There are books you write because an idea captures your imagination. There are books you write because a character refuses to leave you alone.
And then there are the stories that seem to arrive at precisely the moment you need them.
For me, Hemlock Manor was one of those stories.
I have always loved Gothic mysteries, haunted houses, dark family secrets and the peculiar beauty of places where the past refuses to remain buried.
But when I began writing Hemlock Manor, something else was happening beneath the surface.
Writing it became a therapeutic experience.
I don't think I fully appreciated it at the time, but as Chloe's story unfolded, I could almost feel something healing through my fingertips.
Every chapter became more than another piece of fiction. There was something deeply comforting about sitting down and allowing the words to flow.
Perhaps that is one of the extraordinary gifts of storytelling. Sometimes, while we are busy trying to understand our characters, we begin to understand something about ourselves.
A Young Woman Searching for Belonging
At the heart of Hemlock Manor is Chloe, a sixteen-year-old girl who has already experienced more loss than anyone her age should have to endure.
When she is adopted by the mysterious Nightshade family and taken to the isolated coastal town of Shadowbrook, she hopes for a fresh beginning.
But life, as Chloe soon discovers, rarely unfolds quite as we expect.
Her journey becomes one of love, belonging, uncertainty and the difficult business of learning whom to trust.
And surrounding it all is Hemlock Manor, an ancient estate with secrets of its own.
I won't spoil Chloe's story here. Readers deserve to discover those secrets for themselves.
What I will say is that writing her journey meant a great deal to me.
More than I can easily explain.
When Hemlock Manor Became My Reader Magnet
When I first launched my author website, I wanted to give something meaningful to readers who chose to subscribe.
So I offered Hemlock Manor as a free gift.
Anyone joining my mailing list could receive a copy of the novel.
And to my astonishment, the subscribers began arriving.
Before long, I had more people on my mailing list than I had ever imagined possible.
I should have been delighted.
And, in many ways, I was.
But something didn't feel quite right.
I had given away a story that was deeply personal to me, and I had very little idea whether anyone had actually enjoyed reading it.
I wasn't looking for applause. I simply wanted to know whether Chloe's journey had meant something to someone else.
So I decided to ask.
The Email That Changed My Mind
I wrote what I thought was a pleasant, friendly email to my subscribers.
Nothing demanding. Nothing complicated.
I simply asked what they thought of Hemlock Manor and Chloe's story.
Had they enjoyed the journey? Had the characters stayed with them?
I was genuinely curious.
The response was not quite what I had hoped for.
Instead of receiving the reader feedback I had been looking forward to, I watched a surprising number of people unsubscribe.
And the reviews I had hoped might follow never materialised.
I'll admit, it was disheartening.
Not because readers owed me anything. They certainly didn't.
But because I began to wonder whether giving away the novel had been the right decision.
Perhaps people had subscribed because they wanted a free book, rather than because they were interested in my writing.
Or perhaps they simply hadn't had time to read it.
I couldn't know.
What I did know was that the arrangement no longer felt right to me.
So I made a decision.
I removed Hemlock Manor from my subscriber offer.
And I gave the novel another chance.
A New Home on Kindle Unlimited
I made Hemlock Manor available through Amazon's Kindle platform and enrolled it in Kindle Unlimited.
I didn't know what to expect.
There was no grand strategy behind the decision. I simply wanted the story to have an opportunity to find readers who were genuinely interested in it.
And then something rather wonderful began to happen.
People started reading it.
Reviews appeared.
And readers began discovering Chloe's story.
Even now, I occasionally notice another copy being purchased or another reader finding the novel through Kindle Unlimited.
It isn't something that happens with great fanfare.
There are no trumpets. No fireworks.
Just the quiet, rather lovely knowledge that somewhere, someone has decided to spend a little time in Shadowbrook.
And perhaps that is why this particular book means so much to me.
It seems to have found a way to keep going.
Why I Call It My Magic Story
Over time, I began referring to Hemlock Manor as my magic story.
Not because I believe there is some mysterious force directing readers towards it.
But because its journey has surprised me.
A novel that began as a deeply personal, therapeutic writing experience became a free gift for subscribers.
When that arrangement left me disappointed, I wondered whether I had made a mistake.
Yet the story wasn't finished finding its audience.
Once I gave it a different home, readers began discovering it in their own time.
And they still do.
There is something quietly reassuring about that.
As authors, we spend so much time worrying about whether our stories will be noticed. We wonder whether the covers are right, whether the descriptions are compelling, whether anyone will ever care about the characters we've created.
But sometimes, a story simply needs the opportunity to meet the right reader.
Hemlock Manor has taught me to appreciate those moments.
One reader. One review. One person who couldn't put the book down.
They matter.
And Chloe's Story May Not Be Over
There is another reason Hemlock Manor remains close to my heart.
I have been thinking about turning it into a series.
The idea of returning to Shadowbrook, revisiting its mysteries and exploring what might happen next is enormously appealing.
I hope to make that happen.
There is nothing to announce just yet, and I don't want to promise a book before it has been written.
But the possibility is there.
And I rather like the thought that Chloe's world may still have more stories waiting to be told.
A Story That Gave Me Something Back
Looking back, I realise that Hemlock Manor has given me far more than I expected.
Writing it brought me comfort during a time when I needed it.
Sharing it taught me something about expectations, disappointment and the complicated relationship between authors and readers.
And watching it gradually find an audience reminded me why I began writing in the first place.
Not for numbers.
Not for rankings.
But for the extraordinary privilege of creating a story that another person might carry with them long after turning the final page.
That is enough to make me grateful.
And if Hemlock Manor continues finding its way into the hands of readers, one by one, I shall be delighted.
After all, every story deserves a chance to find its people.
And this one will always be my magic story.
