The Silent Choir
About
Forty voices. Not one of them singing.
Coby McTavish has a lectern, a title, and two hundred students who assume he knows what he's doing. What he does not have is an explanation for Thomas Tallis — five centuries dead, composer to four monarchs, survivor of every purge that took everybody else's head — standing in the chorister hall accusing him, loudly, of tampering with a ledger he has never seen.
By nightfall the ledger is gone. So is Tallis.
Something has been holding the Highlands University of Ghostology together, and it is failing. When it goes, every ghost on the hill is erased with it. The only thing that can stop it is a forty-part motet nobody has sung since the Tudors — and Coby has to find all forty voices before the silence arrives.
He also has a beheaded queen issuing orders from thirteen levels down, a friend on the other side who cannot tell him why, a knight in a bowler hat with a family he cannot save, and a spectral HR department that would like a word about his paperwork.
Everybody in this building wants something from him. Not one of them will say what.
